This was formed when we realised that many of our retail colleagues simply couldn’t attend our meetings, as they needed to be opening their shops by 8.30! Past chairs have included Emma Holden, Matt Short and Steph Bilton. The Retail Group has, as its raison d’être, the simple aim of bringing more trade to Newark – and keeping it there! The Retail Group is part of our Action Group, but has additional, retail-specific meetings to which any retailer is welcome.
The Retail Group has carried out many promotional activities, often in association with the Newark Advertiser, including the Annual Christmas Tree competition; promotion and provision of Xmas car parking and late night opening; the large-scale Christmas promotion a year back, when everyone who did £X of shopping in the weeks leading up to Xmas was entered in a big £1,000 draw; the Mystery Shopper; shop display training; and, in association with the police, our local shop watch scheme. We regularly have a float in the Newark Carnival, and attend many other promotional activities within the area, including the Newark Show.
