The Action Group – Education

The Business Club prides itself on helping to establish links between local education and local employers.

Informally, many of our members assist with local schools and, through the Action Group, we try to offer whatever support may be requested.   Examples of ways in which members can help include (this is not an exhaustive list!):

  • Taking a student on work experience – anything from a day to a couple of weeks
  • Allowing ‘work shadowing’
  • Hosting a visit from interested students
  • Going in to school or college to talk about your business or profession
  • Updating teaching staff on new initiatives in your field
  • Providing samples of your products
  • Providing useful ‘offcuts’ or ‘rejects’ that may have significant education value – an efficient method of recycling!
  • Assisting on ‘mock interview’ days
  • Helping to facilitate ‘Enterprise Days’
  • Providing apprenticeships
  • Helping with ‘Young Enterprise’
  • Notifying the schools about vacancies which may suit school leavers
  • Offering prizes or supporting competitions (prizes may be monetary, work placements or products..)
  • In short – doing anything that helps you get better employees, or helps young people get a better appreciation of ‘the world of work’ .

Giving students the chance of talking to ‘real businesspeople’ has such great value.  It adds to, and supports, what they have been learning – but in a ‘real world’ environment, and therefore has (in their minds at least) far greater validity and meaning.

If you could be generally interesting in providing any assistance – don’t worry, you won’t be committed to anything! – please make any informal contact with us here.

The Club is also an active member of the local Employer Engagement Group, which tries, more formally, to put these ideas and opportunities into practice.  To make contact with the group, please contact the current chair.
